Reno/Flag/Bear can make you a Deadman
Yesterday was a killer ride! Rey and I decided to head up Cement Creek in CB South for what turned out to be a four hour ride. That was mostly my fault since I'm old and slow. I was still recovering from the day before. I have done this ride, but Rey had never been to CB, so I decided to take him on one of the more scenic routes. There are many ways to do this ride. I prefer not to spend too much time pedaling up roads, so I drive up Cement Creek Road to the bottom of Deadman's trail head.
From here the route is only 17.8 miles or so. However, get ready for some great long climbs, and killer downhills. Your only road on this ride is the initial climb...the rest is single-track. You start at around 9500 ft, climb to 11300 ft, back to 10250, up to 11300 again, and back to 9960 only to go up again to 10600 before heading down Deadmans to where you park. By this time you're starving so I recommend the Teocolli Tomale in CB, or the Brick Oven. If you're heading to Gunnison, go for Marios.
I love riding in Crested Butte. They have some of the best trails in the state. All in all this was a great weekend. If you ever get the chance to ride in CB, go in July or August when the snow is gone and the flowers are in full bloom. Fat Tire Bike Week is in June, but after several years of mis-management, it's a shadow of what it used to be. Also, since there's still lots of snow during that time many trails are closed. Someone should tell them that...oh wait...everyone has.
Until the next ride!
Later,
Sir RexALot.
